“¿Pero cómo he podido irme, mi vida,
y dejarlo todo atrás?”

-------------
"But how could I have left, my love,
and left everything behind?"

This question—one that anyone who has ever left behind a former version of themselves to chase a dream might ask—echoes time and again in “Despatriada”, the new single by Mia Salazar. She shares it in the first person, drawing from her own migration to Northern Europe. Yet, the sentiment is universal, resonating with anyone who has ever taken the leap into a new life—a shift that ultimately becomes far more transformative than we could have ever imagined.Who hasn’t burned their bridges at some point, leaving everything behind and giving up a vital piece of their identity in search of something better? And who hasn’t realized that turning back is no longer an option; that the only way to return home is by pushing forward, completing the circle to find yourself back where you started, but this time, entirely transformed?

“Y ahora regreso a abrazarte
después de tantos naufragios.
Y aunque parezco la misma,
ahora con otra voz canto.”

----------
"And now I return to embrace you
after so many shipwrecks.
And though I may seem the same,
now with a different voice I sing."

Mia Salazar has the rare ability to place a mirror right in front of us through a song that gets inside your head and never leaves. Driven by one of those masterclass compositions where the verse and the chorus compete for catchiness, we suddenly find ourselves trapped inside a road movie, watching our own lives flash before our eyes. This is beautifully captured in the music video for “Despatriada” which is built from real round trips the author took along various European highways over the years. These journeys could easily mirror the ebbs and flows of our own lives: our desperate flights forward, running away from ourselves and leaving everything behind. After catching us off guard with three stylistically and sonically distinct offerings —the Scandinavian bulerías of “Ajolote”, the noise ballad “Mantas” and the folkloric trip-hop of _“Escuchando a Dios”_ —Mia Salazar does it once again on this fourth single. This time, the nostalgic atmosphere transports us straight back to the early nineties—an era when an inspired The Cure released "Wish", R.E.M. did the same with "Automatic for the People", and Nirvana quite literally set everything ablaze with a flamethrower so that nothing would ever be the same again.Back then, Mia was nothing but a child—that specific stage of life to which, in one way or another, we will always remain tethered. That’s just the law of life.

“Me llevaré a mis fantasmas
y viviré despatriada
Con medio cuerpo flotando
y el otro anclado en mi infancia.”

-------------
"I will take my ghosts with me
and live exiled
With half my body floating
and the other anchored in my childhood."

Lyrics¿Pero cómo he podido irme, mi vida,
y dejarlo todo atrás? (x 4)
Desde que cerré la puerta
y mi cajita de muertos
llena de sueños salvajes
No supe que yo iba dentro
Y ahora regreso a abrazarte
después de tantos naufragios
Y aunque parezco la misma
ahora con otra voz canto
¿Pero cómo he podido irme, mi vida,
y dejarlo todo atrás? (x 4)
Que las semanas se acorten
para que pueda besarte
Que no te mueras de vieja
mientras yo viva distante
Me llevaré a mis fantasmas
y viviré despatriada
Con medio cuerpo flotando
y el otro anclado en mi infancia
¿Pero cómo he podido irme, mi vida,
y dejarlo todo atrás? (x 4)
